Templo Expiatorio del Santísimo Sacramento in Guadalajara, Mexico

Templo Expiatorio del Santísimo Sacramento in Guadalajara, Mexico

Often called one of the most beautiful churches in Latin America, this is a must-see sights in Guadalajara. Located only 2 kilometers (a little over one mile) west of historical downtown, this church makes an easy side trip, especially coupled with a visit to the Art Museum of University of Guadalajara (Museo de las Artes Universidad de Guadalajara) right next door.

Due to its neo-Gothic style, this magnificent church looks aged, but it was completed only in 1972 after 75 years of construction. The front facade features mosaics made in Vatican. The clock in the bell tower was imported from Germany, featuring 25 bells playing various music pieces while small statues of twelve apostles circle in and out of the tower. Inside, the French stained-glass windows filter spectrum of sunlight into airy space supported by soaring columns and arches.

In front of the church is a large plaza where locals hang out after work. On weekend, the plaza hosts a market, and many festivals and celebrations are also held here.
